Congratulations to Brandon "Beast Mode" Baker for being our November Member of the Month. Over the past couple of months, Brandon has increased his dedication and abilities by leaps and bounds. It has been a pleasure watching him put in the work and see results! We had a chance to chat with Brandon about his CrossFit experience. Here it is, from the Beast himself -
CFTC: How were you referred to CFTC / what motivated you to join?
Brandon: I had been interested in CrossFit for about 6-9 months before I joined. I was just browsing online at locations in the area that worked well for me logistically on a daily basis. I was with a different fitness program for some time prior and just got bored with it and plateaued. I really wanted to take that next step and try to push myself in a different manner.
CFTC: What accomplishment are you most proud of and why?
Brandon: There are a couple of accomplishments I am most proud of at this point.
1. Just not quitting when I was seriously debating it a few months ago. Sticking with it and actually taking my commitment up a notch when I wasn’t happy with my improvements and finally realizing it was me not maximizing my opportunities and commitments.
2. Just overall improvement on rope climbs and back squats. From having never had to climb a rope since the 2ndgrade and barely getting 2 reps in a row, I am proud of how far I have come. Another one that sticks out is back squats. I remember doing “bro squats” with a lighter weight at the very beginning, afraid I was going to have to drop and never let myself go low enough as it was probably 15 years ago since I had to do legit back squats.
CFTC: What do you spend the majority of your time doing outside of the gym?
Brandon: For favorite out of gym activity, I like to bike, boat, golf, kayak, travel, watch sports, movies, hang with friends & family. Drink the occasional Busch Light or Scotch.
CFTC: Who has played a key role in helping you develop a new skill or has pushed you or challenged you during a WOD?
Brandon: Certainly each coach has played an iatrical role in my development. Also when I have been coming consistently at 6:30am, being able to partner with Seth has helped and that alone pushes me.
CFTC: What movement are you most looking forward to improving?
Brandon: I definitely want to keep improving on my strength with squats, push press, and cleans and jerks, but actual movements I am looking forward to are improved pullups and longer reps with kipping and possibly learn the butterfly motion. I also would like to improve my double unders, do a bar muscle up, and finally be able to do a handstand push up.
